Open House Will Introduce Emergency Services Explorers to Parents and Students

With the blaring of sirens, the rush of adrenaline and the need to serve the community, many young adults get excited about careers in emergency services. Soon they will be able to sample these careers through Exploring. Beaufort County Community College will hold an Exploring open house on January 31 at 6:00 p.m. for parents and young adults 14-20 years old who are interested in future careers in firefighting, emergency medicine or law enforcement.

Exploring is an affiliate program of the Boy Scouts of America, immersing participants of any gender in career experiences and mentorship to teach them important life and career skills. Participants will experience day-to-day duties and activities from mentors in the field to see if their career goals match. Exploring also equips young people with character, leadership and life skills that can help them in any future careers.

“Many people working in emergency services started out in Exploring,” said Mark Nelson, VP of administrative services at the BCCC. Nelson is a veteran and went through the Exploring program himself.

Participants will be in an observational role in Exploring, and they will need to enroll in a program at the college if they want to pursue a credential. The activities are extra-curricular and will not interfere with their high school schedule. Participation in the program will cost $34, but scholarships are available.

The open house will give parents and participants more information about what to expect from the program, as well as hands-on activities such as fingerprinting, fire extinguishers and CPR at different stations to show some of the activities they will experience.
