BCCC Students Awarded Scholarships Through Foundation
The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the spring 2019 semester. The BCCC Foundation has awarded over $145,000 in scholarships during the 2018-2019 academic year.
Melissa Adams, 49, received the Myrtle Cutler Jones Scholarship. The Jamesville resident is part of the nursing program and plans to work in hospice care. The daughter of Avery and Brenda Hilton of Chocowinity, wife of Timothy Adams and a mother of two, she attended Chocowinity High School and holds an Associate in Applied Science in Paralegal Technology. Established in 2002 by the family of Myrtle Cutler Jones, this fund provides an annual scholarship to a second year BCCC student in a medical technology program. Jones, a Beaufort County native, recognized the importance of a medical facility in a rural community. She wanted her estate to benefit students in the medical field. Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA.
Jacob Edwards, 22, received the Dr. Adolphus L. Spain Teacher Education Scholarship. Edwards is studying special education as part of the early childhood education program. He is the son of John and Sheila Edwards of Chocowinity and he attended Southside High School. The Chocowinity resident plans to transfer to East Carolina University and currently works at Beaufort County Schools as a substitute teacher. Eligible students must be graduates of any public high school in Beaufort County, North Carolina with a preference given to graduates of Northside High School, with a demonstrated financial need. Students should be enrolled, or plan to enroll, in a program leading to a degree in teacher education.
Tanisha Garrett, 42, received the Cypress Landing Scholarship. She is working toward an Associate in General Education. The mother of five currently works at Maxim Healthcare Services as a habilitation technician. The Winterville resident attended Ayden-Grifton High School and plans to obtain her license as a practical nurse. The homeowners in Cypress Landing subdivision joined forces in 2007 to create this first-of-its-kind endowment at BCCC. Mrs. Helen Sommerkamp and Mr. Chris Harris lead the effort to organize the campaign and within a few months, this small community of 500 homes met its goal. This scholarship is awarded to a BCCC student residing in Beaufort County and who demonstrates need.
Jamie Hauser, 20, received the Irwin & Frances Hulbert Scholarship. She is part of the nursing program, and attended First Flight High School. The Washington resident plans to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University. She is the daughter of Daphne and Clay Hauser of Kitty Hawk, and she works as a cashier at Bear Drugs. Established in 1991, first to memorialize Harry and Lorraine Alvis - the parents of Frances Hulbert, this endowment was renamed in 2008 by the Hulbert children. Frances Hulbert served on the BCCC Foundation’s Board of Directors for many years and her husband Irwin was an Episcopalian minister. The Hulbert scholarships are awarded to nursing students who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing. Preference is given to students committed to working with geriatric patients in Beaufort County for a period of one year after graduation.
Michael Rees, 22, is working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Automotive Systems Technology. The Washington resident attended Washington High School and plans to work in the automotive industry. He currently works at West Park Motor Company as a service manager.The homeowners in Cypress Landing subdivision joined forces in 2007 to create this first-of-its-kind endowment at BCCC. Dylan Respess, 19, received the Harold & Louise Lane Scholarship. He is part of the licensed nurse practitioner (LPN) program. The son of Sherri Respess of Washington and John Respess of Plymouth, and he attended Northside High School. The Washington resident plans to obtain an Associate Degree in Nursing. Established in 1998 in memory of Harold Alton Lane, Jr., and in honor of Constance Lane Howard, by their parents Harold Lane, Sr. and his wife Louise, this endowment provides annual scholarships to one or more students in the nursing and or an associate degree program.
Glenn Simmons, 34, received the Grey & Jarl Bowers Scholarship. He is working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Human Service Technology. The Greenville resident attended East Carteret High School and plans to own his own business. Grey Worley and Jarl E. Bowers provided for this endowment in their wills. Grey Bowers was a home economics teacher and Jarl Bowers was a successful businessman and community leader. The Bowers believed deeply in the value of education as well as the mission of BCCC, and bequeathed this endowment in 2008 to help students demonstrating need and enrolled in a curriculum program.
Claire Taylor, 19, received the Grey & Jarl Bowers Scholarship. The Williamston resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing and is part of the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. The daughter of Roy and Lucy Taylor of Williamston, she attended Riverside High School. Grey Worley and Jarl E. Bowers provided for this endowment in their wills. Grey Bowers was a home economics teacher and Jarl Bowers was a successful businessman and community leader. The Bowers believed deeply in the value of education as well as the mission of BCCC, and bequeathed this endowment in 2008 to help students demonstrating need and enrolled in a curriculum program.
