Students Awarded Scholarships Through BCCC Foundation

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the fall 2019 semester. The BCCC Foundation has awarded over $165,000 in scholarships during the 2018-2019 academic year. Students can still sign up for Late-Start classes starting in October. Tickets are still available for the BCCC Foundation’s fundraiser featuring music from the Embers Featuring Craig Woolard at the Washington Civic Center on October 24.

McKenzie Drew, 18, received the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. The Williamston resident is part of the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. Drew attended Riverside High School and plans to work at Vidant Medical Center. She is the daughter of Beverly and Mike Drew of Williamston.

Mrs. Sam Tim (Tay) Carter, with encouragement from her children Libba, Lou, Clay, and Mary, started the Tayloe Family Endowment in 2003, in memory of her grandfather, Dr. David Thomas Tayloe. The endowment also honors his numerous descendants who have made significant contributions to the medical community of Beaufort County. Scholarships generated by this endowment are awarded to BCCC students enrolled in any medically related program.

Brian Edwards, 18, received the David Clark Scholarship. The Chocowinity resident is part of the mechanical engineering program. Edwards attended Southside High School and plans to work as a mechanical engineer. He is the son of Chris and Stephanie Edwards of Chocowinity, and currently works at Horton Turf Management.

The David Clark Endowment was established in 2011 by Trader Construction Company-New Bern, NC and Potash Corp-Aurora, NC in memory of David Clark. David was a Trader Construction Company superintendent with more than 30 years of industrial construction experience. He was an exemplary employee and excellent role model for his fellow co-workers. He was also a man of faith, community involvement, and a native of Beaufort County, NC. This endowment is available to BCCC students in any of the industrial technology programs­–automotive systems, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, or welding.

Jacob Edwards, 23, received the Cypress Landing Scholarship. The Chocowinity resident is part of the early childhood education program. Edwards attended Southside High School and plans to work as a special needs teacher. He is the son of John and Shelia Edwards of Chocowinity, and currently works as a substitute teacher for Beaufort County Schools.

The homeowners in Cypress Landing subdivision joined forces in 2017 to create this first-of-its-kind endowment at BCCC. Mrs. Helen Sommerkamp and Mr. Chris Harris lead the effort to organize the campaign. This scholarship is awarded to a BCCC student residing in Beaufort County and who demonstrates need.

Shelia Edwards, 48, received the Washington Rotary Scholarship. The Chocowinity resident is part of the early childhood education program. Edwards attended Chocowinity High School, holds an Associate in Arts & Science and plans to work as an elementary teacher. She is the wife of John Edwards, a mother of two, and the daughter of the late William Delma and Annie Ruth Hill. She currently works as a teaching assistant at Chocowinity Primary for Beaufort County Schools.

Established in 1994, scholarships are awarded annually to BCCC students who have academic promise and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students who have a tie to the Rotary organization and exhibit service to the community.

Madison Ellis, 22, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. The Farmville resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing. Ellis attended Farmville Central High School, holds a Phelebotomy Technician Certificate and plans to work a pediatric nurse practitioner. She is the daughter of the Brian Ellis of Winterville and Lisa Wade of Farmville.

Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to current or former employees of Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy.

Angie Elzey, 53, received the Dr. Nancy Alford Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Human Services Technology. Ellis attended Bath High School and plans to work as a case manager. She the wife of Jonathan Elzey, a mother of one and the daughter of Autry Shavender of Bath. She currently works at Hyde Correctional Institute as an administrative associate II.

Established in 2018 by the BCCC community in memory of instructor Joseph Alford’s mother, Dr. Nancy Alford, this scholarship provides educational opportunities for students demonstrating financial need. Dr. Nancy Boylan Alford was the owner and operator of Carriage House Psychological Associates in Roanoke Rapids. Dr. Alford and her husband Reverend John B. Alford Jr. spent 57 years together. The Alfords want to keep her memory alive and foster the students who feel a sense of purpose by helping others. Scholarships are made available, but not limited, to students in the fields such as psychology, sociology, human services technology, and nursing.

Faith Forbes, 18, received the Meredith Griffin Revels Scholarship. The Williamston resident is part of the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. Forbes attended Riverside High School and plans to work as an operating room nurse at Martin General Hospital. She is the daughter of Leslie and Tangie Beacham.

The Meredith Griffin Revels Scholarship is awarded to Martin County residents enrolled in a nursing program or related medical field. Selection is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Krystael Gainer, 30, received the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. The Williamston resident is part of the medical office administration program. Forbes attended Williamston High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. She plans to work with Vidant or in a doctor’s office and currently works at Pecheles Ford & Toyota as head cashier/receptionist.
