Students receive scholarships through BCCC Foundation



The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the Fall 2020 semester. The BCCC Foundation is currently raising funds through an online auction to support scholarships. Students can apply now for Spring 2021 scholarships.

Grace Alford received the State Employees Credit Union Scholarship. The New Bern resident plans to transfer to East Carolina University and work as a practicing psychologist.

SECU Scholarships are awarded to students who best exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, “People Helping People,” and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Preference will be given to students whose parents or guardians and family members are public sector employees who live and work in North Carolina. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 of higher and be enrolled in an associate degree, diploma or certificate program.

Kathlynn Bland, 20, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward her Associate Degree in Nursing. The daughter of Larry and Emily Bland of Washington, she plans to finish nursing school. Bland currently works as a server at Ribeyes of Washington.

Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy is now known as O’Neal’s Pharmacy. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need.

Allie Cabacar, 21, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. The Creswell resident is part of the medical office administration program and working toward an Associate in Science. Cabacar attended Columbia Early College High School, and she plans to earn a bachelor’s degree and become a department director for a hospital. She is the daughter of Michael and Lynn Cabacar of Creswell.

Founded in 2001, the Louse R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings and poetry. The foundation seeks to effect positive change in the communities and lives of the people who are served through its philanthropic support. They seek to build effective relationships with grantees through a willingness to understand the challenges they face. Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

Callee Hodges, 20, received the Thomas Minges/Pepsi Cola Scholarship. The Winterville resident is part of the nursing program. She is the daughter of Calvin and Jenny Hodges of Winterville, and currently works at Vidant Medical Center as a nursing assistant II. Hodges attended D. H. Conley High School, and plans to become an intensive care nurse.

Two Thomas Minges/Pepsi Cola Scholarships are provided annually to qualified students who are enrolled full time and a resident of a qualifying county. Recipients may also be high school students entering college in the fall semester. Students must exhibit academic achievement with a GPA average of 3.0 or better and special awards, job experiences and community activities are considered for final award.

Yumi Matsunaga, 18, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. The Washington resident is part of the nursing program. Matsunaga attended Washington Montessori Public Charter School and plans to become a registered nurse.

Macy Radcliffe, 18, received the Thomas Minges/Pepsi Cola Scholarship. The Pinetown resident is part of the criminal justice program. Radcliffe attended Northside High School and holds a Criminal Justice Diploma. She is the daughter of Penelope and Reid Radcliffe. She plans to transfer to East Carolina University to study criminal justice or forensic studies and currently works at Radcliffe Marine as an administrative assistant.

Irvin Tellez Palacios, 19, received the Dr. Barbara & Tom Tansey Scholarship. The Washington resident is working on his Associate Degree in Nursing, and he is part of the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) program. Tellez Palacios attended Beaufort County Early College High School and holds an Associate in Arts, an Associate in Science, and a Community Spanish Interpreter Certificate. He plans to work as a nurse practitioner and currently works the night shift at Intermarket Technology.

Established in 2016 by Dr. Barbara Tansey, the endowment funds scholarships to students who require financial assistance to attend BCCC where the student does not qualify for federal financial assistance to no fault of their own. Dr. Barbara Tansey served as the fifth college president and retired May, 2017.

Jordan Woolard, 25, received the Bunyan Ruritan and the Levi “Scott” McGowan Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing. Woolard attended Washington High School, and she plans work as a registered nurse and further her education. She is the daughter of Jeff and Sherry Woolard of Washington.

Established in 1991, Bunyan Ruritan Scholarships are awarded to students residing in BCCC service area who demonstrate financial need and strong academic promise. Scholarships are awarded annually for fall and spring semesters.

Established in 2018, the Levi “Scott” McGowan Scholarship is to provide financial support to an academically capable, second year nursing student demonstrating financial need. Beaufort County must be the birthplace or county of residence for the student selected. This scholarship is to assist with tuition.
