Beaufort CCC Celebrates First Graduates of Barber Academy

Beaufort County Community College (Beaufort CCC) proudly celebrated the graduation of its inaugural Barber Academy. The ceremony marked the successful culmination of rigorous training and education for five talented graduates who are now positioned to make their mark in the local barbering industry.

Ricky Dunlop-Beacham, Antonio Guilford, Willie Lewis, Jamari Nelson, and Khahliya White completed over 1500 hours of training to stand for licensure. During their time in the program, the college brought on Broderick Best as the full-time daytime instructor and opened a location at 238 W. Main St. in Washington, N.C.

Dr. Dave Loope, Beaufort CCC president, said, “I want to say how appreciative we are of the students and all that you have persevered through and sticking with us,” Loope said. “I had no idea when we first began discussing starting this program how detailed, involved and rigorous this program it is. It has thrived because of our instructors Broderick Best and Russell Shaw. I want to extend my appreciation for using your abilities to professionalize our program and these graduates.”

Russell Shaw, instructor for the part-time evening program, said, “Right now you have the opportunity to impact the community. You have to figure what does that look like for me in the industry. You don’t have to impress. You don’t have to be anyone else, just find your lane, and figure out who you are in the industry. You want to become an individual who stands out.”

“Barber school is not easy,” said Broderick Best. “You have to give up working at a place that pays you a certain amount of money. You have kids who don’t have their parents during certain times of day. A lot of the time we’re looking at TV trying to find heroes, but these guys are heroes.”

The Barber Academy offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes theoretical instruction and practical experience. Students are trained in various barbering techniques, from classic cuts to modern styles, as well as essential business mindset required to succeed in the industry. The program also emphasizes the importance of hygiene, safety, and customer service.

The next Level 1 course will start September 30. Students must attend a Barber Orientation on September 23 before starting the program.

The public is welcome to visit the Barber Academy’s barbershop for services. Appointments are appreciated, but walk-ins are welcome.
